What we watch for
Jute is a natural fibre, and it behaves like one. It takes up moisture from the air, so goods packed damp can arrive with mould after weeks at sea. That is why packing is part of our specification, along with the condition of the goods when they go into the cartons.
Mills make the cloth, the sacking and the twine; converters turn them into finished goods. For a printed bag both matter, so we look at the cloth and at the converter's work before a sample is made.
Questions about jute goods
Are jute bags biodegradable?
Jute is a natural plant fibre, and the Government of India describes it as biodegradable (PIB, 7 Sep 2026). A bag is more than its fibre, though: many jute shopping bags have a plastic lamination inside, and prints, glues and trims count too. If you plan an environmental claim to consumers, specify an unlaminated bag and keep the evidence for the exact words you use.
Can we print "eco-friendly" on jute bags sold in the UK?
In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority's Green Claims Code expects environmental claims to be truthful and accurate, clear, complete, fair in any comparison, to consider the whole life cycle, and to be backed by evidence (CMA, 20 Sep 2021). It covers businesses whose claims reach consumers, including wholesalers. Keep the evidence behind any "eco" wording you print.
