What we watch for
Coated fabric has two parts, and both matter. The base, woven or knitted, gives strength and stretch; the coating gives the face, the colour and the grain. A thin or poorly bonded coating can crack at folds or peel at the edges, so we name both parts in the specification.
Because the material is made rather than grown, its colour and thickness are far more even than leather's. That suits long runs of corporate gifts and retail ranges that have to match from shop to shop.
Questions about vegan-leather goods
Is rexine the same as vegan leather?
Rexine is the name often used in India for coated fabric: a woven or knitted base with a polymer face that looks like leather. It uses no animal hide. Whether a finished bag is fully vegan also depends on its glue, thread, dyes and trims; The Vegan Society's standard excludes any animal product, by-product or derivative in making the product. Specify those if you will say "vegan".
PU or PVC: which coating should we choose?
Both are coated fabrics: a textile base with a plastic face, either polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). They are different plastics, so name the coating in the specification, with the base fabric and the finish you want, and check with your importer whether your market needs a laboratory test before sale. We send a sample in the chosen coating before any order.
Is vegan leather more sustainable than leather?
We make no claim either way. Coated fabric uses no animal hide; its face is a plastic coating on a textile base. Leather is an animal hide, tanned. Which is better for the planet depends on what you measure, so decide the claim you want to make first, then ask us for the facts behind it: coating, base fabric, tannery and test reports.
