Cotton handloom sarees from West Bengal

West Bengal weaves more of India's handloom sarees than any other state: 35.3% of them, by the government's Fourth All India Handloom Census (2019-20). The cotton ones come from weaving towns in Nadia and Hooghly, among other districts, in cotton yarns as fine as 100s count.
Some Bengal sarees carry names registered to the place where they are woven, as geographical indications. We use a name like that only for sarees bought from those registered to use it. For proof that a saree is handloom, we ask the maker for the Handloom Mark or the India Handloom Brand label, the government's two handloom labels.
Colour matters as much as weave. If your market needs a colour-fastness or azo-dye test, tell us before the sample is made.

Silk sarees, such as Baluchari, are not on this list for now.

Are these real handloom sarees?
For a handloom order, we ask the maker for the Handloom Mark or the India Handloom Brand label, the government's two handloom labels. Both are issued to makers, not to traders (Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Compendium of Handloom Schemes, 2024). We also inspect the sarees before they ship.
Which customs code do cotton sarees use?
In India, cotton handloom sarees are exported under chapter 52 lines that depend on weight and weave; for example, 5208 41 21 covers plain-weave sarees woven from dyed yarn, up to 100 g/m² (DGFT ITC(HS), read 26 October 2026). In your country a finished saree may be classed as a garment instead. Your customs broker decides.
