Leather goods from India

Leather goods made to your drawing and specification, from makers in Kolkata and across India, and inspected before they ship.

Kolkata's leather workshops cut, stitch and finish wallets, bags, belts, gloves, footwear and small leather goods, and we live and work in the same city. When a product is better made elsewhere in India, we look there too.

Start with your specification: a drawing or a sample, the materials, sizes, colours and finishes, your logo or none, the packing, and any sustainability goals, such as certified leather or plastic-free packing. We find a maker who can build to it, agree it with you in writing, and inspect the goods against it before they are packed. We hold no certificates of our own, so when your market asks for one, we ask the maker for the proof.

What we can source

What Kolkata's leather workshops make today, grouped by who it is for. It is a sourcing list, not stock, and none of it is a claim of past orders.

Not on the list? Ask. Name the product, the quantity and where it is going, and we will tell you whether we can find a maker in India who makes it well.

What we watch for

Leather is a natural hide, and no two hides are quite alike. Colour shifts from one batch to the next, the grain changes across a single skin, and the thickness varies from the back to the belly. A careful cutter places every pattern piece with that in mind.

That is why our specification names the leather, the grain, the colour and the finish, and why the bulk is inspected against it before it ships. What you approved in the sample is what you should receive.

Selling in the UK? The chemical limits for leather are on our duty and rules page. Tell us your market, and we ask the maker for a laboratory test report before the bulk is packed.

Questions about leather goods

Why source leather goods from Kolkata?

India's Council for Leather Exports names Kolkata as a major production centre for leather goods. What that means for you: we live and work here, so we can visit the maker, hold your sample in our hands and watch your goods being packed, rather than judging them from photographs.

Full grain, corrected grain, bonded: what do the leather labels mean?

Full-grain leather keeps its whole outer grain; nothing is sanded away. Corrected-grain leather has had the grain partly buffed off and a finish applied (Leather Working Group definitions, Jan 2024). Bonded leather is made from leather fibres and binders; in the US, FTC guides say it should not be called simply "leather". Whatever the label, ask for the animal, grain and tannage in writing.

Vegetable-tanned or chrome-tanned leather: what is the difference?

Chrome-tanned leather is tanned mainly with chromium salts. Vegetable-tanned leather is tanned with plant tannins, with tanning metals at or below 0.3% of its dry weight (Leather Working Group definitions, Jan 2024); it darkens with use. Put the tannage in the specification.
