Kantha is Bengal's own quilting: layers of cotton held together by line after line of small running stitches, all sewn by hand. Makers in West Bengal produce throws and quilts in plain and printed cotton.
Because every stitch is made by hand, no two pieces are exactly alike, and that is part of kantha's character. Size, cotton and stitch density are agreed on the sample and written into the specification, and the order is inspected against it.
